Easy to start from seed.  Start like tomatoes indoors and set out the fern like transplants 4 to 6 weeks later.  It can also be direct seeded.  You need to have patience as it will not be until the Spring of the second year that you can begin to harvest. Planting from seed is the most economical way to start a patch of asparagus but it takes some patience.  (Approximately 200 seeds/pkt.) UPDATED FOR 2025
